Financial Advisor in the AI Age

Choosing a Financial Advisor in the AI Age: What Investors Should Look For

I read an article recently about how much time and effort we can save by using AI for our financial planning. Apparently, even if you know nothing about investing, you can use AI to build a fairly good portfolio in minutes. AI can analyze holdings, compare mutual funds, generate reports, and answer investment questions instantly.

Naturally, a question popped into my head: if AI can do all that, why do we still need a financial advisor?

Twenty years in this business has convinced me that the answer to this question is not complicated. A good advisor’s value was never really about information. The value is about judgment, guidance, trust, and the ability to help investors make sound decisions in every kind of market, from euphoric highs to gut-wrenching lows.

AI can give you data. But it can’t hold your hand when your portfolio drops 20% in a week.

Here are a few qualities I believe investors should look for in a financial advisor.  Qualities that no AI tool, however sophisticated, can replace.

  1. Problem-Solving Ability

Markets are hard to read, and financial products are still harder. A good advisor cuts through the noise by helping you understand the fundamentals and arrive at a clear, confident course of action.

  1. Openness to Change

The financial world moves fast. A good advisor embraces new technology, keeps upgrading their own knowledge, and puts it to work – spending less time on paperwork and administrative tasks, and more time actually addressing your needs.

  1. Strong Values and Integrity

Markets will rise sharply and fall painfully. Through both, an investor needs an advisor who stays grounded and ethical. A good advisor puts investors’ interests ahead of their own commissions, fees, or whatever product is trending that week.

  1. Discipline and Consistency

A good advisor shows up with the same rigor every time, with consistent communication, regular portfolio reviews, real research, and dependable service. Every investor needs a professional who follows a process, not one who chases excitement.

  1. Focus on Client Outcomes

As an investor, you need to pay attention to what actually drives the advisor. Are they focused on gathering more assets, or on genuinely moving you closer to your goals like financial independence, a comfortable retirement, or your children’s education?

  1. Leadership During Uncertainty

Anyone can sound smart when markets are climbing. The test comes during corrections and bear markets. A good advisor communicates proactively and helps investors stay disciplined when emotions are running high.

  1. Entrepreneurial Thinking

The best advisors never stop improving their systems, their processes, and the overall client experience. They invest in their own learning and build more efficient practices, and that constant refinement ultimately benefits investors.

The Bottom Line

AI is going to be part of everyone’s financial life, whether we like it or not. So, the smartest move is to find an advisor who uses AI well. Someone who leverages AI to give you sharper data and insights, but who also brings the kind of judgment that only comes from years of experience. Someone who can hold your hand through a market panic, which no algorithm can do.

So, when you are choosing a financial advisor, don’t start with “How much return can they generate?” Ask instead: Does this person truly understand my needs? Are they technically sharp enough to use emerging tools well? Can they guide me across the years ahead and recommend the right products for my goals?

Look for advisors who combine technology with distinctly human strengths, who can actually get you to your financial goals on time.

I believe there are plenty of advisors like this out there. AI is not replacing human advisors anytime soon, but AI is surely raising the bar for what it means to be a good advisor.
